Woman Soaks Up The DNC

Mazie Laurence, a Fifth District DNC Delegate from Davie County, attended many events last week during the National Democratic Convention in Charlotte.  
The whirlwind began with a welcoming party at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Sunday evening. All four floors of the museum contained tables filled with food.  Anthony Foxx, mayor of Charlotte and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, welcomed the delegates from Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina.
There were many entertainers and lots of dancing, Laurence reported.  As a first time visitor to the museum, she was amazed at the displays of information on the history of NASCAR;  including, of course, the cars and the vastness of area for events.
Each day of convention week began with sponsored breakfasts at the Crown Plaza Hotel where most of the North Carolina delegates stayed. In addition to daily briefings on events, there were speakers, including Schultz and state party council members, some of whom are candidates in the upcoming election. Gov. Beverly Perdue, Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, who is NC Democratic candidate for governor and Linda Coleman, who is the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor gave speeches. Delegates heard from Elaine Marshall, who is seeking reelection as secretary of state, Janet Cowell, who is seeking reelection as state treasurer, and Beth Wood, who is seeking reelection as NC state auditor.  Two candidates for North Carolina Court of Appeals spoke – Judges Linda McGee and Wanda Bryant …
