Former Employee Calls Board Chair ‘Arrogant’

David Speer had been complaining about his treatment from County Manager Beth Dirks and Assistant County Manager Jim Stockert.
The former Veterans Service Officer for Davie County, Speer was speaking at the public forum portion of the county commissioner’s meeting last week. About two and a half minutes in, Dirks told him he had 30 seconds to go.
The county gives speakers three minutes each.
Speer folded his arms and said he needed more time.
Board Chair Carl Humphrey said the three-minute rule had been in effect for a long time.
“But you haven’t abided by it,” Speer said. “I need 11 minutes, the same time you gave Mr. (Bill) Foust last month.”
Foust was allowed extra time last month, without warning, as he apologized for not backing Humphrey as he was being verbally attacked by veterans and others for comments about veterans attributed to him.
Speer’s request brought a little discussion among the board members. Humphrey tossed his pen onto the table in front of him.
“We’re wasting time doing absolutely nothing,” Humphrey said …
