There is a baseball god after all.
Davie baseball coach Mike Herndon was having his doubts after Davie’s loss to Reagan, the third 4-3 setback of the Central Piedmont Conference season.
But all’s well that ends well. Going into Friday, Davie, Reagan and West Forsyth were tied for first. Davie had the tiebreaker over West, but Reagan had the tiebreaker over Davie. The best-case scenario was for West and Reagan to lose and for Davie to beat Reynolds.
Well, it’s good to be good. It’s good to be lucky. And it’s great to be both. Amazingly, the best-case scenario materialized. North Davidson upset West 2-1, Tabor upset Reagan 7-4 and Davie took care of Reynolds 7-0.
As a result, the War Eagles emerged with the outright championship. At 17-4 overall and 7-3 in the CPC, they captured the regular season in back-to-back years for the first time since 1992-93.
“Wow,” coach Mike Herndon said. “That’s something. There’s only four kids on this team that played last year (Ryan Foster, Corey Randall, Nick Boswell and Will Beeson). Nah, it doesn’t happen like that too often. I guess we’re living right. It all worked out …
