Six men have been charged with cock fighting and gambling in the county after the Davie Sheriff’s Office raided a fight in progress over the weekend.
According to Davie County Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Investigator Bob Dewitt, around 5 p.m. on Aug. 13 officers received a tip that cock fighting was being held off Stacey Trail, Mocksville.
According to Dewitt, Sgt. Shawn Ruff began surveillance of the property and watched a man tie a knife onto the leg of one of the roosters and saw money being laid down for gambling.
“A guy was about to release a bird into the pit when officers rushed the house,” Dewitt said.
Six of the suspects were arrested while others fled the scene.
Herberto Hernandez Vazquez, 26, of Hickory Street, Cooleemee;
Hector Sala Rodriguez, 30, of Northridge Court, Mocksville;
Alberto Gomez Chavez, 29, of Durham;
Alejandro Torrez Carrisal, 34, of Junction Road, Mocksville;
Rosendo Bravo Rodriguez, 33, of Glenboe Road, Mocksville; and
Bartolo Herrera Flores, 31, of Stacey Trail, Mocksville were each charged with felony animal cruelty, cock fighting, and gambling.
All were placed in Davie Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 secured bonds.
Dewitt said a search warrant was obtained for the Stacey Trail property and officers seized items used in cock fighting.
