When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you work toward the day that you can say, “I am a breast cancer survivor.”
Angie Slabach of Advance, former math teacher and basketball coach, wife and mom of four, is doing just that.  
“In August 2009, I felt a small lump in my breast and after a mammogram and ultrasound, it went undetected, and I noticed it continued to grow, until another mammogram and biopsy confirmed breast cancer in March 2010. The diagnosis was Stage 4 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma and it has metastasized to the bone. I have been through 6 months of chemo, a double mastectomy, and am currently in the midst of 6 weeks of radiation and taking oral medication, too,” said Slabach.  
Know Your Family History
After research into her family history, Slabach found a couple of great aunts who died from breast or ovarian cancer, so she was tested for the BRCA gene and she and her sister were found to be positive for BRCA 2 gene, resulting in her sister’s preventative bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction on Jan. 4.  “I had participated in the Race for the …
