BERMUDA RUN – Former school board member Marty Carter said a group that first recommended a second high school in Davie County in 2001 made a big mistake.
They failed to realize the emotional attachment Davie residents have to one high school.
Speaking at a town hall style meeting hosted by county commissioners here last week, Carter said the easiest and quickest way to fix overcrowding problems at Davie County High School was to build a second high school. That’s what the 2001 task force recommended.
“But we failed to realize the emotional impact of dividing our high school,” he said. “It was the best financial plan, but failed on the emotional aspect.
“In the past, money has been thrown at that facility (current campus) just to do something. We should take our time … it’s a facility built for the childrens’ grandparents.”
Carter favors one new high school campus near I-40 and Farmington Road.
