War Eagle Offense Bogs Down In 10-7 Loss

The Davie War Eagles were out to prove that ‘09 was behind them. Instead, the offense tripped over itself Friday at Alexander Central. It was as if the offense was constantly moving uphill. The result was a 10-7 season-opening loss that was reminiscent of the ‘09 football opener, when Davie lost 3-0.

The Davie defense showed up very well, but the offense was not what coach Doug Illing had in mind. Quarterback Carson Herndon started 8 of 11 for 89 yards but went 4 of 18 for 25 yards the rest of the way. Herndon was Davie’s top rusher with 15 yards on 13 carries, the numbers skewed by four sacks. Senior Kenyatta Brand and sophomore Stephon Smoot played running back for the first time in their Davie careers, and they combined for 19 yards as Davie finished with 141 yards and three turnovers.

The night started ominously when Brand fumbled after picking up 6 yards on Davie’s first play from scrimmage. That turnover, which triggered three turnovers in a span of 12 plays, translated into a 17-yard field goal and 3-0 lead for Alexander Central.
