Daniel Boone was 16 years old when his family crossed the Yadkin River at Shallow Ford in 1752, before settling into what is now Davie County.
His later life has been well documented. He was one of the most famous people of his time.
But there was little to document those early years and that initial crossing of the river - until now. Yadkin County artist Patricia Hobson has released a print of Daniel Boone and his family as they cross the river.
She unveiled the print at a meeting of the Davie County Historical and Genealogical Society, and was at the Four Oaks Festival in Downtown Mocksville selling copies.
She got the idea from Andrew Mackie, president of the Yadkin County Historical Society.
“He said there’s not a lot of documentation of the years Daniel Boone spent in our area, certainly not artwork,” she said.
The original five- by three-foot painting took more than two years to complete, with several revisions as she learned more about Boone and his relatives and how they traveled.
