Tar Heel Banana Co. operated on NC 801 at Hillcrest Drive in Advance for some 30 years.
But six years ago, it closed.
And while the property has been leased for auto and boat repair businesses since then, it was still zoned as residential-agricultural until county commissioners approved a rezoning earlier this month to highway business with special conditions.
It’s unusual, said county planner Andrew Meadwell, that no one had called to complain. Most requests for a zoning change on 26 acres generate a lot of interest.
