The Marines. The Army. The Coast Guard. The Air Force. The Navy.
It doesn’t matter which one you served in - the important thing is what goes in front of those branches of the armed forces - U.S.
“We hear a lot about what’s wrong with our country,” said Mike Drayton, retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant and emcee at Davie County’s Veterans Day ceremony on Sunday. He looked out over the veterans as they stood to be recognized. “This is what’s right with our country.”
Sunday’s celebration included the presentation of colors by the Davie High JROTC drill team, music by the school’s band wind ensemble - and recognition of the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the monument that stands on the town square in Mocksville - engraved with the names of all Davie men who died in combat.
US Navy Reserve Commander Jimmy Myers was a part of that ceremony 25 years ago, and remembered those who took part, including Davie native and Enola Gay bombardier Col. Tom Ferebee, who gave the dedication speech.
Back then, he talked about a song popular during World War II that had a line “do you know the names on the Good Reuben James?”
